How to prepare for your first hike in the mountains

How to prepare for your first hike in the mountains

A first hike in the mountains is rarely about records. It is about getting there, looking around and coming back without blistered feet and a soaked back. Most of a beginner's problems are solved not by stamina but by the preparation done the evening before: the right footwear, layers of clothing and a sober plan for the day. Below is a basic checklist that works on the easier day routes of Transcarpathia, when you set out from a comfortable base in the morning and return to it in the evening.

Footwear and clothing: the foundation everything rests on

Footwear is the one thing you should not skimp on. Trekking boots or sturdy trainers with a deep-tread sole work well, as they hold on wet grass and stone. The main rule is that the footwear must be broken in. New boots worn for the first time on a route will almost certainly give you blisters. Take plasters or blister patches with you — around the fifth kilometre you will thank yourself.

Build your clothing in layers rather than relying on one warm jacket. The classic scheme has three levels: the first wicks moisture away from the body (synthetics or merino, but not cotton — it soaks through and chills you), the second keeps you warm (fleece or a light down jacket), the third protects from wind and rain (a membrane shell). Layers are easy to take off on the climb, when you are hot, and to put back on at the summit or at a rest stop, where it is always cooler and windier. Add a hat or a neck gaiter and light gloves even in summer — the weather at altitude is different from the weather down below.

Water, food and the rucksack

Take water with a margin: roughly one and a half to two litres per person for a day out, more in the heat. Springs do turn up along the way, but counting on them blindly is unwise. Food should give energy without heaviness: nuts, dried fruit, cereal bars, sandwiches, a little something salty. It is better to snack a little and often than to eat your fill at a single stop.

A day rucksack means 20–30 litres. What must go in: water, food, a rain jacket or poncho, a first-aid kit with plasters and personal medicines, a charged phone with an offline map downloaded, a little cash. Pack heavy items closer to your back and adjust the straps so that the main weight sits on your hips rather than your shoulders. Leave the rest at home — every extra kilogram makes itself felt by the end of the day.

Pace, weather and safety

A beginner's pace is steady and slow. The rule is simple: walk so that you can speak in full sentences without gasping. Take the climb in short steps and pause for a few minutes at a time rather than making rare long stops. Plan your timing and allow for the fact that the descent also demands strength and attention — it is on the way down, when the hardest part seems to be behind you, that most falls happen.

Check the mountain weather the evening before and again in the morning, but trust your own eyes. Clouds that darken and thicken quickly are a signal to turn back before reaching your goal. Set out early: in the Carpathians thunderstorms often gather in the second half of the day. Always tell someone at the base where you are going and for how long. For a first time, choose a waymarked route and do not leave it for the sake of a "better" photograph. Stay with the group, and if you are walking alone, keep all the more strictly to your plan and your return time.

The base and recovery after the route

Out-and-back hikes are convenient because you do not have to carry a tent and your whole camp on your shoulders: you leave one point in the morning and return to it in the evening. Ozero Vita stands on the shore of a mountain lake in Nyzhnii Studenyi, so day walks are easy to plan from here, and in the evening there is no need to think about sleeping in the field. Which summits to take on first and how long they take is covered in our selection of Carpathian peaks for beginners.

After several hours on your feet, muscles are grateful for warmth and water. Carpathian wood-fired hot tubs take the tiredness out of legs and back, while the aqua zone and the pool let you relax without loading the joints. The next step after confident day walks is the high-mountain lakes of the Carpathians. And if the first hike draws you in, look into the wellness section, where recovery after an active day is thought through separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should I allow for a first hike?

The classic loop Pylypets — Velykyi Verkh (1598 m) — Hemba (1491 m) — Pylypets takes a beginner about 8 hours including breaks. That is a full day of daylight, so the start is planned for early morning rather than after breakfast. From the resort to Pylypets is about 10 km, some ten minutes by road, so there is plenty of time left for the route itself.

Do I need special equipment for a first outing?

For the mountain meadow routes, broken-in trekking boots, three layers of clothing and a 20–30 litre daypack with 1.5–2 l of water per person are enough. Neither ropes nor any other technical gear are needed here: the climb goes up open mountain meadow along a well-trodden path. The resort stands at about 800 metres, so the ascent to the Borzhava summits (1598 and 1491 m) works out moderate — roughly the 700–800 metres recommended for a debut.

Do I have to sleep in a tent?

For the radial format, no: you set off from base in the morning and come back to it in the evening, so you carry only a daypack, with no tent and no camp kitchen. Check-in at the resort is from 14:00 and check-out by 12:00, so it is convenient to leave the day of arrival for the drive and put the route on the next morning. Breakfast is included in the price of the stay — that settles the question of food before you set off.

What helps you recover after a route?

After several hours on your feet, heat and water work best.
