Spring comes unevenly to the mountains: grass is already green in the valleys while snow still lies on the tops. It is this contrast that makes April and May a separate, underrated season. The flow of tourists has not yet gathered strength, the air after winter is clear, and nature changes visibly by the day.
The resort stands at about 800 metres in the village of Nyzhnii Studenyi, so spring arrives here roughly two or three weeks later than in lowland towns. That is not a drawback but a way to stretch the season: when the blossom is over down below, here it is only beginning.
Spring month by month
March is not yet spring but a transition. Snow melts in the valleys, the streams break free, and the Shypit waterfall 16 km from the resort runs full after the thaw. The Pylypets ski runs are 10 km away, but how long they hold depends on the snow that year — count on skiing only with the forecast in hand.
April is the month when trails dry out and the woods fill with birdsong. Higher up it is still damp and slippery, so long routes such as the Pylypets — Velykyi Verkh (1,598 m) — Hemba (1,491 m) loop of 8 hours are better left for summer. Short there-and-back walks, by contrast, are at their most pleasant right now: neither hot nor crowded.
May is the peak of spring. Meadows in flower, warm sun by day and fresh coolness in the evening, long daylight hours. At the end of May the porcini season opens in the beech forest and then comes in waves roughly every two weeks right through to late November.
| Month | The weather | What to wear | What to count on |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | Snow melts in the valleys, lies on the tops | Shell layer, hat, waterproof boots | Warm water, hot tubs, the salt room |
| April | Trails dry out, frequent rain, swings within a day | Layers, rain jacket, spare socks | Short walks, fishing, spa |
| May | Warm by day, cool in the evening, long daylight | A light layer plus a warm one for the evening | Blossom, longer routes, the first mushrooms |
One rule covers all three months: layers and waterproof boots. Mornings can be close to freezing, while by afternoon the sun warms things enough for the jacket to travel in your rucksack.
When the snow melts and the blossom starts
There are no exact dates here — everything depends on what the winter was like. The logic runs as follows: first the valleys and southern slopes clear, then the forest, and last of all the mountain meadows, where snow lies in the shade long after the grass has turned green below.
Blossom follows the same order, from the bottom up. The first flowers appear in the valleys; the primroses and crocuses of the polonynas come noticeably later. The main rule is simple: admire and photograph, but do not pick, because many spring species are in the Red Book and a mountain meadow recovers slowly.
The Valley of Narcissi and the meadows in bloom
The region's main spring event is the flowering of the narrow-leaved narcissus in the Valley of Narcissi near Khust, part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. Khust lies 91 km from the resort, so this is a separate full-day trip rather than a stroll between breakfast and lunch.
The valley usually blooms in the second half of May, but the exact dates shift each year with the weather, so it is better to check the current picture before setting off. More on the route, footwear and time of day is gathered in a separate piece about the Valley of Narcissi.

A warm programme in case of rain
Spring weather does not ask permission, so a backup plan is no luxury. The indoor pool at the Boutique Hotel is open all year round: the water, enriched with sea salt, is heated to about +28 °C, with a counter-current, a wall waterfall and a jacuzzi alongside. The open-air 50-metre pool is seasonal: it opens once the warm weather settles, the depth there runs from 1 to 1.65 m, and there are 200 loungers on the shore. Details are in the aqua zone section.
The indoor pool at the Boutique Hotel has water enriched with sea salt, a counter-current, a wall waterfall, a jacuzzi and panoramic windows onto the forest. In summer it is open only to guests staying at the resort — bear that in mind if you are coming for a single day.
Carpathian wood-fired hot tubs are at their very best in spring: the classic ritual is 10–15 minutes in the hot tub and then a contrast — the pool, a cold douche or simply the cool air. The tub seats up to 6 people and can be booked for one or two hours.
If heat is not for you, there is the salt room: a 30–40 minute session in an armchair, with no medicines and no strain from the heat, suitable for children too. Together with the aqua zone, the infrared sauna and the gym it is included in the price of the stay. Heat treatments are not recommended for cardiovascular conditions or during pregnancy — consult your doctor.
Why spring works out cheaper
There is no direct "spring discount" in the price list — the benefit lies elsewhere. To confirm a booking a deposit is enough — the full rate for one night; the rest is paid at check-in. The difference in the sum you have to tie up in advance is noticeable.
Second, the choice. In spring the calendar is freer, so you can actually take the property you wanted rather than the one left over: the resort has 11 properties — 3 hotels and 8 cottages. Current terms are easy to check on the prices page.
Third, fishing. On wild waters the spawning ban runs roughly from 15 March to 9–16 June, while the resort’s private stocked lake has no such limits: rods are provided free and you pay only for the weight of the catch and for cooking it.
The May holidays: when to book
The May weekends are the only genuinely busy stretch of spring.
A few small things. Check-in is from 14:00, check-out by 12:00; early check-in or late check-out costs 50 % of a night's rate. A booking can be cancelled free of charge, with the deposit refunded, no later than 30 days before arrival — the money is returned less 7%. If you cancel later, the amount paid can be used until the end of the current year.
Spring promises neither guaranteed warmth nor cloudless skies — and in that lies its honesty. But it gives what is missing at the height of the season: space, quiet and the sense that nature is waking up right now, next to you. For the first spring outings into the mountains the first hike checklist comes in handy: the trails are still wet and the weather changes fast.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit the Carpathians in spring?
May is the most comfortable month: warm days, long daylight hours and meadows in bloom, and at the end of the month the porcini season begins. April suits short there-and-back walks while the trails dry out, and March is more about warm water and treatments than about the mountains. Bear in mind that at an altitude of around 800 metres spring arrives two to three weeks later than on the plains.
Can you swim in spring?
Yes, but in the indoor pool at the Boutique Hotel: it is open all year round, the water is enriched with sea salt and heated to about +28 °C, and there is a counter-current, a poolside waterfall and a jacuzzi. The open-air 50-metre pool is seasonal — it opens once the warm weather sets in. In summer the indoor pool is available only to guests staying at the resort, which is worth knowing if you are coming for a single day.
Why is a spring break better value than a summer one?
The difference is in the price of the dates themselves, not in the terms: all year round a booking is confirmed by a deposit — the full rate for one night, with the rest paid at check-in. A booking can be cancelled free of charge, with the deposit refunded, no later than 30 days before arrival — the money is returned less 7%. If you cancel later, the amount paid can be used until the end of the current year.
What is there to do in spring when it rains?
The aqua zone, the salt room, the infrared sauna and the gym (from 16 years old) are included in the price of the stay, so a day indoors comes together with no extra charges. Heat treatments are not recommended for cardiovascular conditions or during pregnancy, so in such cases it is better to choose the salt room and consult a doctor.

Warm water, tubs and quiet work all year round — but the Carpathians outside the window change every time.
